Phonom Rung is an ancient Khymer mountain temple that was built during the Ankor Wat era. Hinduism was the main religion
at that time and this temple has detailed carvings depicting various Hindu gods. It is also built with 15 doors, which once
a year, align with the rising sun. It marks the time of year to begin planting. It just so happened that I was there for
the one morning this year.

Leading up to Phonom Rung |

|
We went the day before just to check it out and found out that the next morning was THE morning. |
Monks walking |

|
We played bocce and frisbee under the wonderful trees and on the delicious grass. |

15 Doors |

|
Somebody asked us if we had come for the sunrise, we had no idea what they were talking about. |
Hindu Gods |

|
This is one scene from the epic poem Ramayana. |
|

My friends Tony and Ted where staying in Buri Ram with us at the time and we woke up a little after 4:00 am to drive back
to the temple for the sunrise. I was figuring on a huge crowd, but we were part of a crowd that might have numbered 100 people.
There were another group of people who held a ceromony at the front of the temple. The were all dressed in white, and later
that morning over breakfast, we came to understand that they were some sort of extended family that gather there each year.
The sunrise |

As it shown through all the doors it gave me an amazing feeling. |
